chord-dave
Chord DAVE

DAC, digital preamplifier and headphone amp

Chord DAVE is the flagship digital-to-analogue converter from Chord Electronics and is part of the Choral range. As well as a DAC it is a digital preamplifier and a headphone amplifier: the digital volume control, which the manufacturer describes as lossless, allows it to be connected directly to a power amplifier.

The name stands for «Digital to Analogue Veritas in Extremis». Chord calls it the most advanced DAC it has ever made and, in its own words, the most advanced in the world; it also states that over twenty years of research, development and engineering are distilled into the device.

FPGA and filter

Conversion is handled by a Spartan 6 FPGA which, according to the manufacturer, has 1,000 times the processing power of a mass-produced DAC chip and is loaded with over a million lines of code, written to tackle the timing issues of the signal. The filter has 164,000 taps.

Chord credits this processing capability with markedly more precise timing and a noise shaper that it states is superior to that of any other known DAC. The stated figures include a dynamic range of 127.5 dB and a channel separation greater than 125 dB at 1 kHz.

Connections and controls

The digital inputs are four 75 Ω S/PDIF coaxial BNCs (44.1-384 kHz), one AES on XLR and two TOSLINK opticals (44.1-96 kHz) and a galvanically isolated USB Type-B, which accepts PCM from 44.1 to 768 kHz and DSD up to DSD512. The analogue outputs are an unbalanced RCA pair, a balanced XLR pair and a 1/4-inch TRS jack headphone socket.

Chord states compatibility with headphones up to 800 Ω and a configurable crossfeed. A large LC display, set in the characteristic porthole, shows input, sample frequency, volume and settings; on the front there are a rotary encoder with a large stainless-steel knob and ball buttons, and the remote control is included. The manufacturer lists the unit as «Roon tested».

Technical data

Digital inputs: 4 × 75 Ω S/PDIF coaxial BNC (44.1-384 kHz); 1 AES XLR (44.1-96 kHz); 2 TOSLINK optical (44.1-96 kHz); 1 USB Type-B (44.1-768 kHz, 16-32 bit, PCM and DSD).

Analogue outputs: 1 unbalanced RCA pair, 1 balanced XLR pair, 1 × 1/4-inch TRS jack headphone socket.

Formats: PCM from 44.1 to 768 kHz (16-32 bit); DSD from DSD64 to DSD512, native and DoP, depending on the input.

Filter: 164,000 taps.

Frequency response: 20 Hz-20 kHz ± 0.1 dB.

THD + N: -127.5 dB (A-weighted).

Channel separation: greater than 125 dB at 1 kHz.

Dynamic range: 127.5 dB (A-weighted).

Headphone output (1 % THD): 6.8 V RMS into 300 Ω (154 mW); 6.8 V RMS into 33 Ω (1.4 W).

Output impedance: 0.055 Ω (short-circuit protected).

Power supply: 90-250 V AC, 50-60 Hz, auto-switching.

Power consumption: 40 W at full power, 10 W in standby.

Dimensions (including connectors): 335 × 152 × 78 mm (W × D × H).

Weight: 5 kg.

Finishes: black and silver.

Included: 10 A IEC mains cable, infrared remote control with 2 AAA batteries, USB Type-A to Type-B cable, optical cable.
