High-current power cable at the top of the Storm Series
Dragon Variable Current is the leading model in the Storm Series, AudioQuest's most advanced line of mains cables. It is tuned for loads with a varying current draw: power conditioners and regenerators, isolation transformers, power and integrated amplifiers, and components with amplification on board such as AV receivers, active loudspeakers and amplified subwoofers.
The cable is sold individually, with a European Schuko plug for the mains and a choice of IEC connector for the component.
Conductors and current transfer
The conductors are solid-core and combine Perfect-Surface Silver (PSS) with Perfect-Surface Copper+ (PSC+). Having no strands removes electrical interaction between wires, while the smooth, pure surface of both metals gives orderly guidance to the fields inside the conductor and the magnetic fields outside it; high-purity silver keeps distortion lower still. ZERO-Tech sets low DC resistance alongside an absence of characteristic impedance: high-current transients are supplied on request without compression, and the cable handles transient peaks many times greater than its continuous rating.
Noise reduction
RF/ND-Tech reduces the distortion produced by induced radio-frequency noise, using a phase-cancelling common-mode network and proprietary dielectrics that add linear differential filtering. The RF drains, made of 100% PSS silver and direction-controlled, carry the noise picked up by the shields of the line and neutral conductors to earth through the third pin of the plug. The 72 V DBS generates an electrostatic field that optimises the insulation and raises its efficiency at high frequencies; it is joined by an RF Trap, a technology developed for the Niagara Series power products, which cuts induced RF noise further. All conductors are direction-controlled, to drain noise away from the points where it would cause distortion.
Plugs, terminations and lengths
The plugs are the best in the AudioQuest catalogue: red copper and beryllium copper contacts with Hanging-Silver plating, which lowers distortion and dissipates high-frequency noise more effectively. The equipment-end connector can be C13, the most common IEC format, C15, the notched variant for components with the matching inlet, or C19, the larger format for components with a C20 inlet. Lengths: 1 m, 2 m and 3 m.
