Power cable for source components with solid PSC+ copper conductors
Tornado Constant-Current is the version of the Tornado optimised for source components, those with a steady current draw: disc players, DACs, high-level turntables, preamplifiers. It belongs to the Storm Series, the top line of AudioQuest mains cables, where it sits above Thunder and one step below Hurricane.
It is aimed at home theater enthusiasts, audiophiles and people working professionally with audio and video who want to start from clean power, the basis of every successful system.
Conductors and plugs
The conductors are solid-core Perfect-Surface Copper+ (PSC+), the finest copper the brand uses. Solid wire rules out electrical interaction between strands, one of the biggest sources of distortion; the surface matters because the conductor guides both the fields inside it and the magnetic fields that reach outside, and that of PSC+, very smooth and pure, removes hardness and adds clarity. The plugs are the best AC plugs AudioQuest makes: red copper and beryllium copper coated with silver by the Hanging-Silver process, which lowers distortion and helps high-frequency noise dissipate.
Uncompressed current and noise reduction
Two solutions set the Storm Series apart from earlier AudioQuest mains cables. ZERO-Tech joins low DC resistance to a characteristic impedance of zero, so current is transferred without compression. RF/ND-Tech cancels induced RF noise, which upsets circuit behaviour, using a phase-cancelling array working in common mode and proprietary dielectrics that add differential linear filtering.
The patented 72 V DBS (Dielectric-Bias System) sets up an electrostatic field that optimises the insulation and raises its efficiency at high frequencies; it is joined by an RF Trap, a technology first created for the Niagara Series power products, which lowers induced noise further. The drain wires are silver-plated, to dissipate RF noise better, and conductor direction is controlled so that noise is carried away from the points where it would do most damage.
Terminations and lengths
The wall-end plug is a European Schuko. For the equipment end three IEC connectors are offered: C13, the most common on sources and preamplifiers; C15, the notched variant for inlets that run at higher temperatures; C19, for electronics fitted with a high-current inlet. Lengths are 1 m, 2 m and 3 m.
