SLM XL: what is inside
Compared with the SLM, the SLM XL gains two more passive radiators and a cabinet stretched to 867 mm, a length that matches the height of screens measuring 65 inches or more. The four 102 mm paper radiators work alongside two active long-throw woofers of the same size and lower the bottom limit of the response to 100 Hz. Thickness stays in flat-television territory at 48 mm overall, and the 4.1 kg weight calls for no special fixings.
At the top end is a 26 × 36 mm Folded Motion tweeter with a 133 × 44 mm pleated diaphragm, which takes over at 3,100 Hz. It radiates across 80° in width and in height alike, so the tonal balance does not change whether the speaker is mounted upright beside the screen or lying flat beneath it: three SLM XLs make a consistent LCR front stage. The magnetic badge on the grille can be repositioned and turned to match. Behind the grille, a solid front panel of brushed, anodised aluminium keeps the drivers firmly in position.
The back carries keyhole slots that engage with the wall bracket packed with the speaker; anyone who would rather not drill will also find a curved base in the box for upright use on a shelf or a cabinet. The SLM XL is a passive 4 ohm speaker with 94 dB sensitivity, to be partnered with amplification of 20 to 140 watts per channel. The terminals are low-profile push types, so as not to add to the distance from the wall, and the filter is protected against thermal and current overload.
