Reference three-way design with ZYLON™ diaphragms and Japanese birch cabinet
NS-5000 is Yamaha's reference three-way standmount speaker, with a 30 cm woofer, ZYLON™ diaphragms and a Japanese white birch plywood cabinet. It is sold individually — two units are required for a stereo pair.
The design recalls the format of the NS-1000M but uses materials and resonance-control systems developed for contemporary reproduction. Tweeter, midrange and woofer share a PBO ZYLON™ diaphragm base, while R.S. ducts, acoustic absorbers and a high-quality crossover work to maintain uniform timbre and limit cabinet colouration.

ZYLON™ and Monel diaphragms
Tweeter, midrange and woofer use diaphragms based on PBO ZYLON™ fibre, a material with high propagation speed and good internal elasticity. The surface is deposition-coated with a Monel alloy developed by Yamaha, with the aim of maintaining uniform speed and tonal character across the full range.
R.S. ducts
R.S. (Resonance Suppression) ducts control resonances that form behind the mid and high-frequency drive units. The tube geometry acts on specific resonance modes without relying on large amounts of absorbent material, so fine signal nuances are not attenuated together with unwanted colouration.
Japanese birch cabinet
The enclosure is built from laminated white birch plywood sourced from Hokkaido and is reinforced to support the 30 cm woofer. The choice of material and bracing aims to control surface vibration without turning the cabinet into an inert mass disconnected from its overall acoustic behaviour.
Piano Black finish
All six external surfaces receive a gloss black finish produced using painting and polishing processes linked to Yamaha grand-piano manufacture. The surface layer also increases cabinet rigidity and helps limit the small vibrations that can emerge during reproduction.
Crossover and components
The frequency-dividing circuit is mounted on a double-sided board with 140 µm copper and uses short paths. Components include Mundorf MCap SUPREME EVO capacitors, MResist SUPREME attenuators and a 1.6 kg woofer coil, selected to reduce losses as the signal passes through the network.
