Rock Monitor 80-SM is Paradigm's rock-shaped speaker with a 190 mm woofer: one sealed outdoor cabinet with stereo inputs, twin voice coils and two titanium-dome tweeters, built to fill a garden with sound from one spot.
Rock Monitor 80-SM: the design
Three drive units work inside the rock of the Rock Monitor 80-SM: a 190 mm woofer with two voice coils, one per channel, and two 25 mm PTD tweeters with pure titanium domes, set on the woofer's axis and splayed by 30°. Left and right channels therefore leave the same cabinet and the treble is spread over a broad area, which is what is needed outdoors where listeners keep moving about.
The woofer cone is ICP, an injection-moulded co-polymer polypropylene, carried by a die-cast aluminium basket and driven by a large ferrite magnet. Two second-order electro-acoustic filters divide the bands at 2.5 kHz. Quoted on-axis response lies within ±2 dB between 63 Hz and 20 kHz, at 30° off axis it stops at 18 kHz, and bass extension goes down to 42 Hz (DIN). Sensitivity, as a groundplane figure, is 90 dB.
The PolyGlass shell imitates stone, has no reflex openings and is heavily damped; it withstands bad weather, water and ultraviolet light. Grilles are stainless steel and water drains away through the fissures of the rock. It measures 38.4 × 34.0 × 33.0 cm and weighs 7.7 kg. In mono the load suits 4 ohm amplifiers of 15 to 120 W; in stereo each channel is 8 ohm and the suggested power is 15 to 60 W per channel.
