Motion XT F100 is the first floorstander in MartinLogan's XT line: a three-way with a Folded Motion XT tweeter, a midrange in Nomex-reinforced Kevlar and three 16.5 cm aluminium woofers. It is offered as a pair for high-performance stereo and home cinema systems.
Motion XT F100: drivers and cabinet
Moving up to the XT line brings three things: a larger tweeter, a midrange in a different material and one more woofer. Motion XT F100 fields three 16.5 cm aluminium cones for the low end, a midrange of matching diameter and the 32 x 61 mm Folded Motion XT tweeter, in a cabinet 121.3 cm tall. The stated response stretches from 31 Hz to 25 kHz and the suggested amplifier rating goes up to 450 W, with crossover points at 280 and 2,600 Hz.
The Folded Motion XT in Gen2 Obsidian form has 40% more radiating area than the standard Folded Motion tweeter and a bigger magnet motor: more level, less distortion. MartinLogan describes it as its cleanest and most precise treble outside the electrostatic models. The waveguide built into the baffle lines its dispersion up with the midrange; vertically the output is kept within 45 degrees, horizontally it opens to 90.
The midrange cone is Nomex-reinforced Kevlar, light, stiff and resistant to resonance and ringing, mounted on a die-cast aluminium chassis like the three woofers. The reflex loading exits downwards and the outrigger feet, set by hand with the rubber pads or spikes provided, isolate the cabinet from the floor. Sensitivity of 92 dB, a 4 ohm load and twin terminals for bi-wiring or bi-amping round things off; each speaker weighs 34.5 kg.
