Absolute reference Hi-Fi floorstanding speaker
The KEF Reference 3 Meta is a three-way floorstanding speaker designed for those who accept no compromise in music reproduction. Sold as a pair, it represents the absolute reference point in KEF's Reference range — a series that since 1973 has defined the world benchmark for sonic accuracy. At its heart is the twelfth generation of the Uni-Q® driver with MAT™ technology, the latest evolution of an architecture that has rewritten the rules of modern acoustics. Designed, engineered and hand-assembled at KEF's headquarters in Maidstone, Kent.
Uni-Q® Gen 12 with MAT™: the perfect point source
The twelfth-generation Uni-Q® driver positions the 25 mm aluminium tweeter with MAT™ exactly at the centre of the 125 mm aluminium midrange, creating a single acoustic point source. The result is remarkably even sound dispersion throughout the room, regardless of the listening position.
The MAT™ (Metamaterial Absorption Technology) technology is a patented acoustic labyrinth capable of absorbing 99% of the unwanted sound waves coming from the rear of the tweeter, eliminating at source the distortions and colourations that degrade transparency in conventional speakers. The resulting sound has a purity and naturalness that are hard to achieve with any other technology.
Unprecedented scale, dynamics and precision
The two 165 mm aluminium woofers provide low-frequency extension down to 28 Hz in-room, with a maximum sound pressure of 113.5 dB and a frequency response that extends up to 45 kHz. Harmonic distortion is kept below 0.1% between 2 kHz and 20 kHz — a professional-level performance.
The crossover frequencies of 450 Hz and 2.1 kHz have been optimised to ensure a perfectly seamless transition between the drivers, providing tonal coherence and a three-dimensional soundstage of remarkable precision. Each pair is measured and matched to within 0.5 dB of the reference standard maintained in the KEF laboratory.
Construction, finishes and integration into the room
With a height of 1207 mm (plinth included) and a weight of 51.3 kg each, the Reference 3 Meta is a physical presence as imposing as it is discreet in its proportions. The cabinet is available in five premium finishes: High-Gloss White/Champagne, High-Gloss White/Blue, Satin Walnut/Silver, High-Gloss Black/Grey and High-Gloss Black/Copper, to suit any contemporary setting with elegance.
The bass reflex system is available in a configuration with a short port (response from 38 Hz) or a long port (response from 35 Hz), offering flexibility in acoustic optimisation according to the characteristics of the room. With an impedance of 4 Ω and a sensitivity of 86 dB, the Reference 3 Meta requires a quality amplifier of between 50 and 300 W to express its full potential.
The reference that grows with your system
The Reference 3 Meta is part of the KEF Reference range, a family of speakers that share the same construction philosophy and the same Uni-Q® technology with MAT™. It can be partnered with the Reference 2 Meta as a surround speaker or the Reference 4 Meta as a centre channel to build an absolute reference home cinema system, maintaining perfect tonal coherence across all channels.
