Motion XT C100 is the larger centre speaker in MartinLogan's Motion series: a 2.5-way with a Folded Motion XT tweeter and two 16.5 cm cones in Nomex-reinforced Kevlar, for surround systems built on Motion or Motion XT speakers.
Motion XT C100: how it is made
Motion XT C100 is the centre MartinLogan points to for any surround system built with Motion or Motion XT speakers. It is a substantial cabinet, 61 cm wide, 20.3 cm high and 36.8 cm deep at 15.4 kg, and its stated response starts at 42 Hz and reaches 25 kHz within 3 dB. Sensitivity is 93 dB, impedance 5 ohms and the suggested amplifier rating runs from 20 to 300 W.
The tweeter is the 32 x 61 mm Folded Motion XT in Gen2 Obsidian form, with 79.8 cm² of diaphragm and an enlarged motor. The waveguide that houses it does two jobs in a centre speaker: it keeps dialogue intelligible and makes it sound the same from each chair, with output of 90 degrees horizontally and 45 vertically. The two Nomex-reinforced Kevlar mid-woofers, on die-cast aluminium chassis, are fed by a 2.5-way crossover with points at 1,300 and 2,500 Hz, worked out to avoid lobing.
Like the smaller centre in the series, this one has a reversible cabinet: one way up it sits level, the other way it takes on a slight tilt, handy when the speaker lives on a low shelf or a TV unit and needs to aim at the listener's ears. Loading is reflex with the port at the back, and twin terminals accept bi-wiring and bi-amping. Its tonal character is matched to the Motion XT CI custom-install range.
