Foundation F2: the design
The Foundation F2 is the largest tower in the range and the one that reaches lowest: stated response starts at 36 Hz and extends to 23 kHz within ±3 dB. MartinLogan aims it at listeners who want the widest dynamics, whether in a two-channel system or as the front pair of a multichannel set-up. With 92 dB sensitivity and a 4 ohm impedance it works with amplifiers from 15 to 200 watts.
Compared with the F1, the bass section is what changes: the three woofers measure 16.5 cm across, again with Unibody aluminium cones and stamped steel baskets, and are loaded into an asymmetrical enclosure to keep resonances down. The midrange stays at 14 cm and has a separate sealed chamber. Aluminium cones are an approach carried over from the brand's Motion XT and Motion ranges, and the three-way crossover splits the signal at 330 Hz and at 3,600 Hz.
At the top is the Folded Motion S Gen2 Obsidian tweeter, a thin film folded back on itself that packs 22.6 cm² of surface into a 24 x 25 mm opening. It sits in a waveguide that governs its dispersion and, according to the maker, lines up what tweeter and midrange radiate for more coherent, precise listening. The cabinet is a bass reflex type with a rear port; the five-way binding posts make no provision for bi-wiring.
