The BBC monitor scaled for a real room
LS5/9 is sold as a pair: two 89 dB reflex monitors with a 210 mm woofer and adjustable tweeter level.
LS5/9 is supplied as one stereo pair, with both required loudspeakers included in the purchase. Its mission differs from the small LS3/5A: a 210 mm polypropylene woofer, reflex enclosure and 89 dB sensitivity provide greater output, extension and listening distance. The 34 mm dome tweeter offers front-panel -1/0/+1 dB adjustment to suit room, distance and absorption. This is a monitor for a medium or large lounge rather than a desktop bookshelf.

Why use a large woofer
A 210 mm cone moves more air than the LS3/5A's 110 mm unit and supports a broader presentation without immediately needing a subwoofer. Orchestra, rock and film music benefit beyond two or three metres. Bass is not unlimited: placement and room modes remain decisive.
Three tweeter positions
Front resistor links alter high-frequency level by one decibel. Zero is the starting point; -1 dB can suit reflective rooms or close range, while +1 dB may help a heavily damped space. This is fine adjustment, not a cure for poor positioning.
Amplifier and level
At 89 dB and 8 ohms, LS5/9 is more efficient than its smaller sibling. The 100 W rating does not permit clipping or continuous overload: a stable, quiet amplifier keeps the 210 mm driver controlled. Wall distance should be chosen by listening to port behaviour.
A deliberately thin cabinet
Nine-millimetre birch walls do not pursue the inertia of a massive modern box. They belong to a monitoring philosophy in which panels and damping form part of the tuning. Natural cherry and Velcro-mounted black cloth recall the BBC reference without reducing the product to nostalgia.
Who does not need it
In a tiny room or on a desk, size and listening distance make LS3/5A more coherent. LS5/9 is for retaining monitor clarity while gaining body, dynamics and coverage for a complete domestic room. Strong stands and correct height are essential. A valid comparison uses the same position and matched level: greater sensitivity can sound like quality when it is only loudness. In a suitable room, the real difference is how easily scale and dynamics are maintained at distance. For LS5/9, dimensions, weight, ventilation, connections and system capacity should be checked as one project, leaving operating margin instead of using every specification at its limit.
