An outdoor loudspeaker that plays both stereo channels from one cabinet, using two tweeters and a dual voice-coil woofer. Sold singly, it suits terraces, porches and gardens where each area is best served from a single mounting point.
Stylus 470-SM: two channels in one cabinet
The Stylus 470-SM packs into one enclosure what normally takes two loudspeakers. Inside are three drive units arranged as two separate two-way sections: each channel has its own 25 mm PTD dome, while the 190 mm ICP-cone woofer, built on a die-cast basket, carries two voice coils, one per channel. The terminals take the left and the right signal, so the whole stereo programme comes from a single spot. Two third-order electro-acoustic filters hand over between woofer and tweeters at 2.3 kHz.
The cabinet is a sealed box moulded in PolyGlass, a material chosen to stand up to weather, water and ultraviolet light. Quoted on-axis response runs between 75 Hz and 20 kHz within ±2 dB and holds the same tolerance up to 15 kHz when measured 30° off axis, a figure that matters outdoors, where listeners are rarely straight in front of the speaker. Bass reaches down to 50 Hz by the DIN method and in-room sensitivity is 93 dB.
There are two ways to wire it. Fed a stereo signal, each channel presents a load compatible with 8 ohms and wants 15 to 55 W; fed mono, both sections work together, the load becomes compatible with 4 ohms and the recommended power rises to 15-110 W. Maximum input is 40 W per channel in stereo and 80 W in mono. As with its other loudspeakers, Paradigm points to the sound and hearing research it carries out together with Canada's NRC as the basis of the design.
