6 PerspeX Balanced Pick it MC3: cartridge, arm and suspension
The Pick it MC3 is a general-purpose moving coil with a powerful, dynamic sound, tuned for pop and rock yet equally at ease with a full orchestra. Being an MC, it hands the turntable a complete balanced signal, which the 5-pin mini XLR output passes on untouched. With a lead from the True Balanced series and a balanced phono stage, for instance the Tube Box DS3 B or the S3 B and DS3 B Phono Boxes, noise picked up by the cable cancels out. RCA outputs remain available, and a Connect it Phono E lead is in the box.
Carrying the cartridge is the EVO 9 CC arm, with a 9-inch carbon tube and 8.0 g of effective mass. It works on an inverted cardan joint with four stainless steel points and ABEC 7 races, which gives steady tracking with very little friction. The aluminium base provides azimuth and VTA settings, to be revisited if the cartridge is ever changed.
Below, the construction is on two levels. An acrylic slab on three adjustable aluminium cones houses the motor; above it the Corian sub-chassis, with platter and arm, is held up by three magnets in place of springs, so it inherits none of their noise. The platter is an MDF sandwich topped with vinyl, turns on an inverted spindle with a ceramic ball and is driven by the belt around its rim. The speeds, 33 and 45 rpm, are changed electronically.
