Reference headphone amplification with Yamaha Hi-Fi and sound fields
HA-L7A is Yamaha's flagship headphone amplifier, with floating and balanced amplification, an ESS ES9038PRO DAC, dual toroidal transformers and SOUND FIELD processing.
The design combines an analogue section derived from Yamaha Hi-Fi electronics with processing technologies developed for AV receivers. Alongside Pure Direct mode, HA-L7A offers sound fields dedicated to cinema and music, while USB, coaxial, optical and RCA inputs allow both digital and analogue sources to be connected without relying on a single interface type.

Floating and balanced amplification
The headphone stage uses Yamaha's Floating and Balanced Power Amplifier configuration, in which the amplification circuit is separated from the conventional ground reference. The symmetrical structure reduces the influence of external noise and allows the balanced outputs to be driven while keeping the two halves of the signal independent.
ESS DAC and high-resolution sources
The ESS ES9038PRO converter handles the digital section and works with the USB-B input, which accepts PCM up to 384 kHz/32-bit and DSD up to 11.2 MHz. The asynchronous connection allows the component to act directly as a DAC for a computer without requiring an intermediate external conversion stage.
Dual toroidal power supply
HA-L7A uses two toroidal transformers to separate the requirements of different sections and reduce mutual interference. The chassis rests on five metal feet and adopts a rigid construction that limits vibration transmission, giving the power supply and sensitive circuits a more stable mechanical reference.
SOUND FIELD and CINEMA DSP
SOUND FIELD modes use Yamaha's CINEMA DSP experience to recreate environments such as a concert hall, cinema, live venue or background listening directly through headphones. The function can be bypassed when a more conventional path is preferred, while Pure Direct reduces the involvement of unnecessary circuits.
Headphone outputs
The front panel provides a 6.3 mm jack, balanced 4.4 mm Pentaconn and 4-pin XLR, covering the most common connections on high-end headphones. Declared output reaches 1,000 mW + 1,000 mW into 32 ohms, providing substantial reserve even for models that demand more challenging drive.
Inputs and preamplifier function
Coaxial, optical and RCA inputs join the USB-B connections. XLR and RCA preamplified outputs allow HA-L7A to be used in a system with a power amplifier or active speakers, making use of the DAC and source management as well as headphone listening alone.
